One of the biggest advantages of the introduction of satellite TV was the huge increase in the number of channels on offer to the public compared to what was being offered by the cable TV companies at that time. These channels provided the viewing public with a far wider range of viewing possibilities from sports channels, entertainment channels, children's channels, and including channels covering news and current affairs, and channels dealing with local news and events.
Of these extra channels one of the fastest growing segments in terms of viewer popularity are the channels providing an educational experience as well as an entertainment experience. These channels present viewers with the prospect of being able to develop their understanding of a topic and do it in a way that the viewer can easily understand and absorb the subject.
The range of topics that can be in included in the documentary segment are natural history; art; biographies; geography; history; music and many, many more. The list of subjects is never-ending and all inclusive. In fact it's limited only by the public's absence of interest.
However, regardless of the nature of the topic, most of the programs have several features in common. Firstly, they give the facts as they are without any distortions of the truth and with an absence of opinion.
Secondly superb and impressive photography add to the quality of a program, especially with subjects such as wildlife and geography.
Thirdly, the total production is of the very highest standard and meets the exacting demands of the most discerning viewer. And lastly the majority of the programs are family-friendly allowing all members of the family to view together.
Most of these programs are popular throughout the world and receive much praise from parents, teachers and educational professionals. It can be said that such is the publics' acknowledgement of the educational benefit for school children of these documentaries that many of them are available on DVD.
Some of the wildlife and natural history programs produced by the BBC fit into this category. The David Attenborough series of Life on Earth programs are examples of the very best programs of this genre ever made. The astonishing quality of the action photography and the knowledgeable and professionalism of the commentary ensures that programs of this quality will always be seen to be educational aids of the utmost importance.
Programs of a historical nature about a particular country or a period in time allow the viewer to learn the effects of events on the development of a country, and how some events in the past influenced a country's or society's future actions. Old film footage of bygone incidents improve a viewers understanding of history and make people much more aware of why certain events happened.
Whilst there are numerous categories of programs that the public may consider to be educational , there are many more that the viewer may not consider to be educational. Programs dealing with parenting, child rearing, cooking, home maintenance, gardening, and many more are examples of subjects that the public do not generally consider to be educational in nature.
However it can be confidently said that almost every program has an educational side to it. If a program tells the viewer something they didn't know beforehand, then to that viewer it's educational.
The introduction of high definition television (HDTV) in the homes of the public and the efforts of the program suppliers to meet that demand, means that many educational programs can now be viewed in a superior way. Improved signal reception and vastly enhanced audio had led to a much more satisfying viewing experience, particularly those programs heavily reliant on photographic material.
This trend of improved television technology is best able to be met by the satellite TV companies that always seem to be at the forefront of change. With the recent introduction of 3D TV and its inevitable acceptance by the viewing public in the years ahead, then the transmission of the signal by a satellite will still be far more preferable than any other method of signal transmission.
So for a family to get the most benefit from educational channels they need to have two components - firstly a HDTV to provide the very best visual and audio experience, and a program provider that allows access to as many channels as possible. This can only be a satellite TV company.
